Re: Will bumpouts increase traffic on side streets?

Hi Paul .. good to see someone new adding to the discussion threads ... welcome.   About the hydro poles, I understand that John Bowker has added that request (to bury the wires) to a list of questions he's building for his next meeting at City Hall.  You're right about the coordination with Ontario Hydro ..  a big part of this project is getting the different utilities to work together .. not something they would be doing to the same extent, if it wasn't for the early involvement of people like John Bowker and residents like us.

What I understand from conversations with John is that it would add enormously to the cost and the time of the project.  I will ask him to send a post to clarify.

About the bumpouts,  it's not pouring rain tomorrow morning, we are planning a walk along Roncesvalles at 10 a.m. so we can get a better sense of where the proposed bumpouts will be ... we want to make sure that the bumpouts are really well thought out, so we get the most out of what is still a pretty new approach to streetscape redesign in Toronto.

Re: Will bumpouts increase traffic on side streets?

Hi Mary,

You summarize accurately what I have been told about burying the hydro wires. I have been told that burying the wires must be done first and separately from the rest of the project, and this would take a year. Also, Hydro replaced its poles relatively recently, and is in little mood to scrap them so early into their useful lives. I am not technically qualified to understand the construction issues, although I can certainly imagine a cost issue. Perhaps others can share their experiences with hydro wire burying projects, to give some perspective on the complexity of such projects.

Another issue is the fact that not all the wires could be buried, since the TTC wires would remain in any case. However, even with those wires remaining, burying the rest has been shown to make a big difference in other areas of the city.

I will be asking the planners to reconfirm that burying the wires is impossible, but no one should hold their breath.
