What's a bumpout?

Bumpouts are a rounding of a sidewalk to create a larger sidewalk surface area

Re: What's a bumpout?

I understand that construction could start in 2009. At the next festival in September, could the city "paint", "caulk",  or "brick" a drawing of an outline of the bumpouts along Roncesvalles. This could make the street a full-sized blueprint of the plans for all to see. Even putting portable plants for the trees.

Re: What's a bumpout?

It's a great idea.  We did something like that at the 2007 festival .. we had an artist do a chalk drawing for us at the corner of Constance and Roncesvalles.  And Peter Simon, at the city's Forestry department actually went to a lot of trouble to supply us with a tree.  He was on hand for much of the festival to talk to people about the potential for an expanded tree canopy .. and better planting standards ... as part of the reconstruction work.

In fact, I think we'll be doing some public awareness about this long before the September festival .. and looking at setting up a kiosk as soon as the weather warms up to let people know what's happening.  Let me know if you'd like to help out with that.

Hello everybody sent here from Torontoist!

Just wanted to correct two inaccuracies in the Torontoist posting:

First, Ms. Dotan reported that the proposed transit platforms are "extensions of the sidewalk out into the street for the full width of the parking lane, and thus will allow a streetcar to pull up right alongside: transit riders would no longer go out into the street to board the cars but step directly from the transit platforms onto the streetcars." The post adds that these transit platforms are confusing, since "they will be shared by cyclists, who will ride over them with the help of sloped sides."

Just to be clear: these are NOT extensions of the sidewalk. They are elevated roadways. These roadways are not "shared" in the sense of two groups occupying the same space at the same time. Transit riders will have to step off the sidewalk curb onto the roadway to board the streetcar, just as they currently do. Road traffic must stop during this time. The two differences are, and they are important: 1) the roadway will be at the same height as the sidewalk, allowing disabled riders to board the streetcar without taking a big step up, and 2) riders will only have to cross a bike lane, as opposed to a car traffic lane (click here to get a better idea of what really is being proposed).

Regrettably, the City and TTC chose to name this concept "Bumpouts with Transit Platforms." But these elevated bike lanes are not transit platforms at all. I hope they change the name to something less misleading.

Second, the posting inaccurately states: "curb bump-outs mean you can't pull over into the right/parking lane in advance of making a right turn." As a result, the post says, traffic flow will be reduced. In reality, the bumpouts will be located away from the curb, and will leave room for a right-turn lane. The TTC and City both studied the potential effects of this proposal on traffic flow, and they reported little to no likely traffic slowdowns or increases in trip times. (The TTC has no reason to fudge: they are the one usually opposing such redesign schemes.)

The fact is, Roncesvalles already operates as a two-lane street. The main purpose of the EA is simply to determine the impact of making this arrangement permanent (answer: basically none).

Cheers,
John Bowker

Re: What's a bumpout?

Are there other neighbourhoods with bumpouts and if so, which ones?
