If you wish to help with the next phase of planning for Roncesvalles Renewed. Please join us at the home of Ann and John Senders, on Thursday, November 12th, at 7pm.

In advance of the meeting, you we suggest you familiarize yourself with the current plan available on-line. In particular, Appendix G shows a map of the street as currently planned.

September 21 Community Consultation: Roncesvalles Avenue 2010 Reconstruction Design Elements

The City of Toronto invites you to provide input into the streetscape elements proposed as part of the Roncesvalles Avenue reconstruction.

DATE: Monday September 21, 2009

TIME: 6:30 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.

PLACE: High Park Baptist Church, 9 Hewitt Ave

During this community consultation, city staff will be available to discuss your ideas related to streetscape elements within the scope of the selected Environmental Assessment option. Discussion is intended to focus on design elements such as: trees, TTC platform design (including cycling area), gateway locations, sidewalk treatment, street furniture and others.

The Dig Starts!

Okay, you've seen it. And it's a mess. The streetcars are gone from Roncesvalles and the tracks are being torn up. The 504 streetcar won't run along Roncesvalles again until re-construction is complete in the fall of 2010.

We're down to one lane of traffic along much of Roncesvalles. This first stage involves replacing the sewer and water mains along Roncesvalles. Next year, the rails will be reconstructed.

Watermain and Sanitary Sewer Replacement to Start July 13

It is expected that on July 13, work will begin on the replacement of the watermains and substandard water and sanitary services along Roncesvalles, between Queen West and Boustead.

Traffic and Transit Restrictions:

Traffic will be restricted to one lane of northound traffic.
Southbound traffic will be detoured onto adjacent roads.
Access to sidestreets will be maintained as much as possible, with some short-term restrictions.
Parking will be prohibitted on Roncesvalles from Monday to Saturday for the duration of the contruction.
On Sunday, parking will be provided where possible.
Streetcar service on Roncesvalles has been suspended and will only be reinstated after the tracks are reconstructed in 2010.

Living Sidewalks would help aleviate raw sewage overflow

The Globe and Mail reported today that Levels of raw sewage increasing in waterways. It is based on a report by Ecojustice (formerly the Sierra Legal Defense Fund) just published on municipal sewage overflows in Ontario, called Flushing Out the Truth. According to the report, in 2006 Toronto released over 284 MILLION litres of raw sewage into the lake. Ecojustice also created a report, called Green Cities, Great Lakes, which recommends green infrastructure to prevent Combine Sewage Overflows. Among its recommendations is street trees to soak up rain flow; ie: a Living Sidewalk!

A Walk to (Re)Discover and Renew Roncesvalles

The Roncesvalles Renewed team invites you to participate in a walk up Roncesvalles to look at the broad reconstruction plan and to develop ideas for input to the City of Toronto. We will meet at the Grafton Parkette, at the bottom of Roncesvalles on the east side at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday June 6. We will walk up the street with a map of the new features, discussing the following areas:

Tree location
Street furniture
Transit platform design
Lighting
Crosswalks Bumpouts at intersections
And whatever else might come up that is consistent with the overall plan.

PWI Approves Roncesvalles Environmental Assessment

The Roncesvalles Environmental Assessment (EA) was approved unanimously at the Public Works and Infrastructure (PWI) Committee meeting on May 5th. The report is available for review on the City's website.

After the report is endorsed by City Council, Councillor Gord Perks will facilitate community meetings to discuss specific design details for a renewed Roncesvalles Avenue!

Danish Urbanist Jan Gehl Coming to Toronto

Danish architect Jan Gehl is one of the world’s foremost experts on transforming public spaces and creating walking-friendly environments. He led the development of London, England’s ambitious pedestrian plan, and he is an important influence in New York’s recent transformation of its streets (discussed in the latest Spacing Radio podcast).

He will be speaking for free in Toronto at the Design Exchange on June 3.
